The Role of Speech and Language in Literacy
Presented by E. Debbie Lee, SLPD, CCC-SLP
Tuesday, October 8, 2024
7:00P.M. - 8:30 P.M.
Zoom
Speech and language skills are often isolated from discussion about learning and literacy in school settings. In this presentation, we will discuss how oral language skills are key components to understanding literacy development and how weaknesses in the five areas of language can have layered effects in the classroom. We will use a framework of learning that will allow us to identify and analyze breakdowns and consider alternative ways to support a struggling student.
E. Debbie Lee, SLPD, CCC-SLP is a pediatric speech-language pathologist-learning disabilities specialist and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northwestern University. Debbie's primary areas of interest include speech, language, and learning in school-aged children and the importance of school-based SLPs as agents of change in schools. In addition, she is interested in learning alliances in health profession education.
