Dr. Janet Lerner Fall Seminar:  Morphology: Making Sense of Spelling

Presented by Gina Cooke

After defining the instructional terminology and the role of morphology in the English writing system, this seminar will provide a brief overview of the current science on morphological instruction/intervention and literacy outcomes, including specific considerations for struggling students and students with learning disabilities. Examples of morphological study at various grade levels will be presented, including handouts and hands-on activities.

Gina Cooke is the author of the website LEX: Linguist-Educator Exchange and a Ph.D. candidate in English Studies at Illinois State University.  As a linguist in education, she has taught students about language from preschool to graduate school, consulted in a variety of professional capacities, and is seen on TED-Ed videos about how English words work.  She came to ISU after a close study of English spelling transformed her teaching and has since been recognized with numerous fellowships and awards.
